Running an eCommerce shop is like brewing the perfect cup of coffee. If you are new to my world I am a coffeeholic, so this will be a ☕ themed post🥰. Each step, from choosing the right beans to brewing at the right temperature, requires precision and expertise. Similarly, building a successful online store involves a team of specialists, each with their own unique skills.

This is a topic that frequently pops up during client calls, and I understand why. As an e-commerce shop owner, you want a website that not only wow’s visitors with its design but also converts them into loyal customers.

It’s tempting to believe a single website designer can handle everything. And while some designers are incredibly versatile, the reality is that creating a high-converting, e-commerce website can require collaborations between various talented individuals.

Let’s meet the key players and see how their unique talents can turn your website into a sales powerhouse:

What are the different roles?

Web Designer

A web designer is like the barista who crafts a beautiful latte complete with foam art and all. We focus on the look and feel of the website, ensuring it’s visually appealing and user-friendly.

  • Skillset: Visual communication, layout, user experience (UX) design principles, and user interface (UI) design.
  • Process: A web designer typically starts by understanding the website’s goals and target audience. They then translate the brand identity and UX principles into visually appealing layouts that showcase the website’s functionality and user flow.
  • Focus: A web designer’s primary concern is the visual experience and how users interact with the website. They ensure the website is not only aesthetically pleasing but also intuitive, guiding users towards desired actions.

Web Developer

If the web designer is the barista, then the web developer is the one who grinds the coffee beans and makes sure the espresso machine works perfectly. Web developers bring the web designer’s vision to life through coding.

  • Skillset: Programming languages, frameworks, back-end technologies, and database management.
  • Process: Web developers bring the web designer’s vision to life through coding. They start by understanding the wireframes and mockups, then proceed to code the website’s structure, functionality, and interactive elements. This involves creating a responsive design that works across various devices and integrating any necessary back-end systems.
  • Focus: A web developer’s primary concern is functionality and performance. They ensure that the website operates smoothly, loads quickly, and provides a seamless user experience.

Brand Strategist

Think of a brand strategist as the coffee connoisseur who selects the best beans and ensures consistency in every cup. They define the visual and verbal identity of a brand, ensuring it aligns with the company’s mission, values, and target audience.

  • Skillset: Market research, brand positioning, visual and verbal identity creation, strategic planning, and competitor analysis.
  • Process: A brand strategist begins by conducting market research and analyzing the target audience. They develop a brand strategy that includes the brand’s mission, values, and unique selling proposition. This strategy is then translated into visual elements like logos, color schemes, and typography, as well as verbal elements like taglines and messaging.
  • Focus: A brand strategist’s main goal is to create a cohesive and compelling brand identity that resonates with the target audience and sets the business apart from competitors.

Web Designer, Web Developer, Brand strategist, Copywriter, what's the difference?

Copywriter

A copywriter is like the storyteller who writes the enticing description on the coffee bag, making you crave that perfect brew. They craft the text for websites, advertisements, and other marketing materials.

  • Skillset: Persuasive writing, SEO, content creation, storytelling, and research.
  • Process: A copywriter starts by understanding the brand and its audience. They then create engaging and persuasive content for various platforms, such as website pages, product descriptions, blog posts, and marketing campaigns. The content is crafted to align with the brand’s voice and to drive conversions.
  • Focus: A copywriter’s primary focus is to communicate the brand’s message effectively and to convert visitors into customers through compelling and informative content.

The Interconnection of Roles

Just as making a great cup of coffee involves multiple steps, building a successful eCommerce website can require collaboration among different specialists.

For instance, a brand strategist might develop a brand’s identity, which the web designer then incorporates into the website design. The web developer ensures the site functions smoothly, while the copywriter creates engaging content to attract and retain customers.

This teamwork ensures that each aspect of the website is optimized for both aesthetics and functionality.

Why It’s Important to Know the Difference

Understanding the distinct roles in web design can benefit eCommerce shop owners in several ways:

  • Hiring the Right Professional: Ensures that the project is handled by someone with the appropriate skills and expertise.
  • Effective Collaboration: Allows for more effective collaboration and communication, as everyone understands their responsibilities and how they contribute to the overall project.
  • Avoiding Pitfalls: Prevents potential pitfalls, such as expecting a web designer to handle complex coding or a copywriter to develop a brand strategy, which could lead to disappointing results.

Conclusion

Can one person play more than one of these roles? YES, absolutely! A brand designer can also design websites, and a web designer can also be a web developer, woop woop – yours truly!. The only thing is that the person needs to have the necessary skills required for each role, understand the distinction between the roles, and work through the steps of each process.

So there you go, I hope this post was helpful in shedding light on all these terms that are thrown around a lot in the design industry.
